DATA PORTRAIT

DESCRIPTION

Music is a big part of my daily life. Especially during the pandemic, music connects with my emotion a lot more than usual. For this project, I recorded everytime I listen to music; the mood I felt from the song; and while as how many times I listened to that song during that day. Through the data portrait, I could get a "playlist" that visualize the connection between the music and my emotion.

DESIGN PROCESS

Recorded data:

I mainly used color coding to categorize the data. Cold color indicates the songs that express more of a down mood, warm red indicates the opposite; off-whites represent neutral mood.

First 5sec is the beginning scene, that gives a overall image of the the mood's proportion. Then comes the data from the first day, following up with the other two days. Data are visulized in both text and geomatric form. From viewing the overall percentage of colors, I could tell what mood I was mostly having on that day, or what mood the music was expressing.

REFLECTION

Data visualization has been playing a more and more signification role. Data is not always so interesting to look at, but the visualization can make it much more playful and interactive. It becomes a great way to engaging people in. Moreover, through this project, I had the chance to spend even more time to listen to music, and just listening to music. Which I really enjoyed to do. Since most of the time we are too busy, more often I play music as a background sound while I work on other stuffs. I could also tell my own preference of music genre and artists through the collected data. Could imagine how machine learning in Spotify uses these datas to push me more similar musics.
